Round 4

Devault, PA - April 11, 2019 Rugby PA teams took the fields on a sunny Sunday afternoon for Round 4 of the Spring Season. As teams jockey for position in the division standings, it often comes down to the performance of a particular player, that gets the job done on the day.

In the High School Girls Division 1 competition, the match of the week was the clash between Penn Legacy and visiting West Shore. Both teams are in the running for a playoff spot, making this game particularly important. While the home side were able to get the result on the day, West Shore’s Reyna Bogardus did all she could to keep her team in the game. Nominated by the Penn Legacy Coach, Reyna score and converted her teams only try of the day.

Rey is a senior this year and has been playing for the past 4 seasons. Her commitment and dedication has earned her the title of forwards captain this spring for West Shore. After graduation, Reyna plans on joining the United States Air Force.

In the Boys Division 2 competition, local rivals Simon Gratz and Father Judge took to the field for any entertaining match. Simon Gratz, who have just reinstated their rugby program this spring, secured a big win in their first ever home game. The Bulldogs relied heavily on the efforts of Jordan Mariney, who scored 4 tries on the day. The highlight of the match was his 90 meter kick counter for a try that would secure the victory.

Jordan is from North Philadelphia and has only been playing 11 months. He is planning on attending Lincoln University after graduation. As a multi-sport athlete, Jordan has won the Philadelphia Public League 5A Football Championship four times as a wide receiver. Jordan has an extensive knowledge of music and, as a team captain, serves food to the club during socials and film sessions.

Reyna and Jordan are the latest to the list of winners in the running for our Player of the Year awards, which will be given out at the end of the season. They both will also receive invitations to the All-State Selections Camp on May 25th, where they’ll have a chance to prove they are among Pennsylvania’s best.
