Statement on USA Rugby Financial Future

Several news sources within the rugby community are reporting that USA Rugby will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after a vote on Sunday, March 29th. It’s been well documented that USA Rugby has struggled in recent times and was working to restructure. With the current global pandemic and the cancellation of all spring rugby, things had become even more dire.

Rugby PA has been aware of USA Rugby's financial challenges for some time.  While we had hoped that USA Rugby would be able to weather that storm without disrupting our programs, we nevertheless have taken steps that would have minimized such a disruption if one was unavoidable.

Rugby PA is a separate legal entity from USA Rugby with our own budget, funds, and Board of Directors.  While we receive some important services from USA Rugby like insurance and coach accreditation, those services can be replicated or purchased elsewhere once the global pandemic has subsided and we are in a position to resume our programs.  Our sincere hope is that USA Rugby will emerge from the bankruptcy process as a stronger organization and a robust partner for Rugby PA in the future. However, if that does not work out, we have several alternatives that will assure access to rugby for our members across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

We will continue to update our membership as more information on the future of USA Rugby becomes available.
