RugbyPA All State squads celebrate USA Rugby North East Regional Cup Tournament success

A hugely successful weekend for RugbyPA's All State squads as they swept the USA Rugby North East Regional Cup Tournament in Albany, NY. More than 110 players represented RugbyPA over the entire weekend including Varsity Boys and Girls, Junior Varsity Boys and for the first time ever Junior Varsity Girls and Middle School Boys. The weekend saw success for RugbyPA as they left with Championship wins at Varsity Boys, Junior Varsity Boys and JV Girls, 2nd place for Middle School Boys and 3rd place for Varsity Girls.

RugbyPA All State Varsity Boys squad built on the structure of RugbyPA's new Canterbury Academies throughout the Spring, went from strength to strength throughout the weekend. Captained by tournament MVP Jayden Demmy, the Varsity Squad started Saturday with a 26-10 win over Greenwich, followed by a 36-10 win over MYRO.  Sunday morning continued in a similar fashion with a confident 53 -0 win over NY West. The final game also went the way of RugbyPA's strong Varsity squad as they defeated a solid New York Met side 55-19 to take the Championship title. Thanks to coaches Jack Foley (Villanova/Atlantis) and Sean Robinson (West Shore United). 

Congratulations to Jayden Demmy (West Shore) and Brandon Boon (Unionville) who were selected for the USA Rugby High School All American Tour of Canada this summer on the back of their impressive performances over the weekend.

RugbyPA's All State Junior Varsity Boys followed in similar fashion. The squad showed strength and depth over the two days lead by fly half, captain and MVP Mike Weir. Saturday saw the squad score over 150 points in their two games, defeating Western New York 93-0 and Greenwich JV 66-5.  The Championship final however was a very different story against a physical New York Met team. A late try from Mike Weir saw RugbyPA take the Championship title 14-7 in what was one of the games of the weekend. Coached by James English and Matt Boccutti (Malvern Prep).

RugbyPA's All State Middle School Boys team made its debut at the USA Rugby North East Regional Cup Tournament. Coached by Nic Clapinson (UPenn) and Rick Van Luvender (Media) the 7th and 8th grade team played some of the most entertaining rugby of the weekend. Two very evenly matched games with Greenwich, saw Greenwich take the Saturday game 31-10 but RugbyPA come back and take the Sunday game 28-10. 2017 will see the introduction of RugbyPA's Middle School Academy as the current structure expands.

This year's USA Rugby North East Regional Cup Tournament demonstrated a strong Varsity Girls division as RugbyPA returned as defending champions. RugbyPA lost their first game in a close contest with New York West 33-29. They finished the weekend 2-1 with a 33-0 win of MYRO and a 34-17 win over Rugby CT on Sunday afternoon. A strong New Jersey girls went onto win the Championship. Thanks to coaches, Kevin Castner (Bloomsburg University), Tony DeRemer (West Chester University) and Stacy Mancuso (Doylestown).

RugbyPA's Junior Varsity Girls made its debut at this year's USA Rugby RCT competition. Coached by Kate Daly (Penn State), Matt Dziunycz (Downingtown) and Megan Brosius (Unionville), the squad made up of 9th and 10th grades went unbeaten all weekend.  Saturday's game saw a solid 38-5 win against the North East Selects and a closely fought 14-12 win against Empire saw them win the Championship title for the very first time.
